The volume of Vannicola's complete works contains an essay of 60 pages I wrote as introduction, as well as 160 footnotes.

« Cette pièce, qui s'ouvre par une captivante atmosphère raréfiée, où le charme exquis de l'ancien Théâtre des Bouffes du Nord et le chant lointain des oiseaux jouent aussi un rôle, se termine par la voix expressive d'Agnès Sourdillon, que j'entends encore résonner haute, sonore, comme les applaudissements interminables qui l'ont succédée. Ces applaudissements énergiques ont fait revenir plusieurs fois les acteurs sur scène et dans leur insistance tenace semblaient les rappeler à jouer encore.
En effet, une continuation semblait instinctivement nécessaire, non pas pour la satisfaction banale d'un happy ending, mais pour rendre justice aux sentiments étouffés et inassouvis des quatre personnages qui tout au long de la pièce en sont tourmentés. Face à eux, les amoureux malheureux, il paraît paradoxal que le seul couple effectif est celui d'un vieux professeur en retraite, qui ne semble pas accorder trop d'importance à l'amour, et sa jeune femme, amoureuse d'un autre homme. Ainsi, la fuite finale de ce prétentieux vieillard (d'ailleurs toujours plaintif) avec sa femme laisse chez les spectateurs un sentiment d'inachèvement, en étant le sceau de l'injuste et amère répression des vraies passions. »
